Bangalore Technical Lecture

The Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India), Bangalore Centre, in collaboration with Indian Concrete Institute, Karnataka Centre & Bangalore Institute of Technology (BIT) recently organized a Technical Lecture for fellow members, engineers and people related to the construction industry. The topic of discussion for the evening was “Provisions and issues in the revised IS 1786-2008, high strength deformed steel bars and wires for concrete reinforcement-Specification”. The Lecture proved to be an invaluable experience for the practitioners and professionals who were exposed to new code provisions.

The Technical Lecture was delivered by Dr. C. S. Viswanatha, a renowned Civil Engineer and Academician, and presently, the Chairman of Task Force on Quality Monitoring Committee, Government of Karnataka.With his vast knowledge and experience in reinforcing bars and designs as well as his long-standing association with BIS, Dr. Viswanatha was the ideal person to speak on the selected topic.

The Indian standard for specification of HYSD bars to be used as concrete reinforcement IS 1786-1985 has been revised in 2008. There have been several revisions of clauses and new information has been updated in the revised IS 1786-2008.The lecture by Dr. Viswanatha threw new light on the modifications and implications of these revisions.The entire programme started with registration for members and other attendees along with hi-tea followed by a Welcome Address by Mr. M. S. Sudarshan, Chairman, ACCE(I) BLC. The speaker was then introduced by Mr. P. S. Deshpande, Treasurer ACCE(I) BLC. Dr. Viswanatha’s lecture was followed by a technical presentation by Mr. Vikash Goel, President – Marketing of Shyam Steel Industries Ltd, an integrated steel plant in West Bengal manufacturing a wide range of Reinforcement Bars. The Programme ended with a question-answer session and a final Vote of Thanks by Mr. Nagesh P, Secretary ACCE(I) BLC.
